Compostable organic material makes up more than 50% of America’s waste, generally ending up in a landfill where it’s buried under trash and is not exposed to any oxygen. Instead of breaking down naturally, like it would in a compost pile, it rots and emits methane gas, becoming a threat to the environment when instead it could be a benefit. When compostable organic material is sent to a landfill and buried under trash, it rots, emitting methane gas, instead of being used to build healthy soil.
