Controller

Location: Kansas City, MO (Hybrid/Onsite)
Position Type: Full-Time
Reports To: Executive Director / Board Treasurer

Position Summary

The Controller leads all financial functions of the organization, ensuring strong financial stewardship, accountability, and compliance. This position oversees accounting operations, budgeting and forecasting, financial reporting, internal controls, audit coordination, and strategic financial planning. The Controller works collaboratively with senior leadership and the Board to support mission delivery and long-term sustainability.

Key Responsibilities

Financial Management & Reporting

  • Manage daily accounting operations including general ledger, payables, invoicing, receivables, payroll, and bank reconciliations

  • Prepare accurate and timely monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements

  • Review and present financial reports to the Board of Directors

  • Manage cash flow planning and forecasting

  • Lead month-end and year-end closing processes

Budgeting & Strategic Planning

  • Lead the annual budgeting process and monitor budget performance

  • Provide variance analysis and financial insights to leadership

  • Support long-range financial planning and scenario analysis

Compliance & Controls

  • Ensure compliance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles and nonprofit reporting standards

  • Manage audit preparation and work with external auditors

  • Develop and maintain strong internal control policies and procedures

  • Oversee compliance with federal, state, and local reporting and tax requirements

Grant & Fund Accounting

  • Track and manage restricted vs. unrestricted funds

  • Monitor grant expenditures and prepare financial reports for grantors and funders as required

  • Ensure accurate grant tracking and compliance with grant requirements and donor restrictions

Leadership & Collaboration

  • Advise the Executive Director and leadership team on financial strategy and business decisions

  • Coordinate with external accounting/finance consultants as needed

  • Serve as financial liaison to the Board of Directors

Qualifications

Minimum

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field

  • 5+ years of progressively responsible accounting/finance experience

  • Strong nonprofit accounting knowledge and familiarity with fund accounting

  • Proficient with QuickBooks Online and Stripe

  • Excellent analytical, organizational, and communication skills

Preferred

  • CPA or equivalent credential

  • Experience with audits and IRS Form 990 preparation

  • Experience supervising staff

Compensation and Benefits

Green Employment Educator

Location: Kansas City, MO (Onsite/Hybrid)
Position Type: Full Time (40 hrs/week) Non-exempt
Reports To: Director of Green Core Training & Executive Director

About Green Core Training

The Green Core Training (GCT) provides environmental literacy and workplace readiness training to people in the Kansas City region using a nationally recognized curriculum, and then helps program graduates find green jobs suited to their education, skills, and interests.

There are five phases to the GCT. First, we promote the training. Second, through interviews, we determine which prospective students to admit. Third, we run the multi-week training, bringing community partners and employers into the classroom to speak to the students. Fourth, we assist program graduates in determining which jobs are of interest to them and then finding and applying for those jobs. Fifth, we work with employers to facilitate the hiring of our graduates.

Position Summary

The Green Employment Educator assists their counterpart and the GCT Director in implementing the GCT at each of the five phases. This position is responsible for cultivating relationships with the hosting institution, GCT students and graduates, and employers to achieve the goals of the program. This position facilitates the instruction of the GCT, while also assisting students and program graduates with creating resumes, searching for jobs, preparing for interviews, and obtaining additional resources to attain employment.

Establishing and maintaining relationships with GCT students and graduates and understanding their background and desires for work is a crucial component of the position. This position will also create and maintain relationships with green employers, developing a deep knowledge of employers’ needs and job openings and making that information available to GCT graduates. A main objective of the position is to connect GCT graduates with employers, providing graduates of the GCT with employment in green jobs in the Kansas City market. 

Key Responsibilities

Promote the Training

  • Communicate with hosting and referral institutions (primarily serving the reentry population) to get prospective students signed up for the training; maintain ongoing relationships with these institutions

  • Promote the training to prospective students through presentations, speaking, and distributing flyers

Entrance Interviews

  • Interview prospective students, communicating the class’s format and expectations

  • Determine which prospective students to admit into the class, following admission guidelines and using reasonable judgment

Running the Multi-week Training

  • Prepare for class each day, including: reviewing materials, preparing for activities, bookmarking supplemental materials to share with the class, and setting up AV

  • Schedule guest speakers and field trips for the class

  • Lead the classes (scheduled weekdays from 4:00 to 8:00 pm), sharing the information in the manual, running slides, and facilitating group activities and class discussions

  • Ensure all paperwork is completed, properly filed, and submitted

  • Establish relationships with each student, encouraging them to progress toward employment, e.g. work on resume, signing up for Next Steps meetings, etc

  • Develop student spotlight stories through collecting photos and testimonials and writing

Assist Program Graduates

  • Research job openings available in the metro, compiling them to share with graduates at Next Steps and follow up meetings

  • Assist graduates in constructing resumes, filling out and submitting applications, and preparing for interviews

  • Provide references or letters of recommendation for GCT graduates to green employers

  • Follow up with graduates 30, 60, 90, 180, and 365 days after their graduation to ensure they have what they need to succeed, thoroughly documenting what each graduate is doing, building and maintaining a case file for each graduate

  • Help build and keep updated a green jobs board for graduates to access and apply to jobs

Work with Employers

  • Search for green employers within the Kansas City region

  • Communicate with green employers, developing relationships, with the goal of getting jobs for GCT graduates

  • Help build a system to track the program’s relationship with each employer

Other

  • Complete instructor training and audit classes prior to leading classes of your own

  • Help develop and run environmental education programming for high school students

  • Help organize a Green Jobs Fair for the Kansas City metro

  • Help plan and execute the launch of a volunteer group composed of GCT graduates

  • Responsibilities also include: weekly communication check-ins; creating content for flyers, brochures, and social media posts; documenting communications and progress; and additional duties as assigned

Qualifications

  • Passion for protecting the environment and public health

  • High school diploma or equivalent

  • Excellent interpersonal skills

  • Experience working with people from diverse backgrounds

  • Experience and interest in assisting communities of concern, specifically, people returning to the community from incarceration

  • Background in community engagement

  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written

  • Positive leadership skills and ability to motivate and encourage others to achieve goals

  • Ability to work collaboratively and effectively on a small team

  • Educational (teaching/training) experience preferred

  • Experience working with people to prepare them for the workplace

  • Strong organizational skills

  • Experience using Microsoft Office: Powerpoint, Word, Excel

  • Experience maintaining a website

CDL Driver – FIFA Fan Fest

Location: Kansas City, MO Region
Position Type: Part-Time, Temporary
Reports To: Director of Operations

Be a part of something big this summer! KC Can Compost is seeking a dependable, safety-minded CDL Driver to support compost collection during major World Cup-related events in the Kansas City region.

This part-time role is about more than driving. It is part of KC Can Compost’s work to keep food waste out of the landfill, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and show what sustainable event operations can look like at a major regional scale. The Driver will play a key role in ensuring compostable materials are collected safely, efficiently, and professionally during these high-visibility public events.

Morning routes. Set schedule. Local driving.

Key Responsibilities

  • Operate 25-yard dump truck on local route.

  • Drive vehicle from event site to drop-off location, empty compostable materials, then return vehicle to event site.

  • Follow route timing and coordinate with the Operations team.

  • Complete pre- and post-trip inspections.

  • Ensure accurate documentation of route activities.

  • Maintain cleanliness and operational safety of the assigned vehicle.

  • Represent KC Can Compost in a professional and courteous manner with clients and

    the public.

  • Follow all safety procedures and comply with company, local, and federal driving

    regulations.

Schedule

  • Morning routes.

  • Combination of weekday and weekend hours. Approximately 8-10 hours per week.

  • Planned service dates:
    June 10, 12–15, 17, 20–22, 25, 27–28
    July 4–6, 10–12

  • Additional dates and hours may be added based on event needs.

Required Qualifications

  • Valid CDL (Class B minimum; Class A preferred) with a clean driving record.

  • Ability to reliably work on scheduled dates.

  • Strong time management and communication skills.

  • Reliable, punctual, and committed to environmental sustainability.

  • Experience with dump trucks or similar equipment.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Waste, recycling, or compost experience.

  • Familiarity with Kansas City area.

  • Interest in or knowledge of composting, or environmental services.

Physical Demands & Working Conditions

  • Ability to lift, push, or pull up to 50 pounds.

  • Some standing, walking, bending, and lifting throughout the shift.

  • Exposure to outdoor weather conditions.

  • Work is primarily outdoors and in vehicles.

Compensation and Benefits

  • $28 - $32/hour
