Clean. Easy.
Community-powered.

Every banana peel, coffee filter, and wilted lettuce leaf has the power to do good—if we give it the chance.

We make it simple for households across the Kansas City region to keep food scraps out of the landfill and put them to work for the greener good. Whether you’re new to composting or already a waste-sorting pro, our residential drop-off program helps you take real climate action from your own kitchen.

What’s Compostable?

You can compost a lot more than just fruit and veggie scraps!

Here’s what you can toss into our orange cans:

Food Scraps

Fruit & veggie peels, leftovers, eggshells, coffee grounds, tea bags, meat, dairy, bread, and other food scraps

Paper Products

Paper towels, napkins, uncoated paper plates, pizza boxes (no plastic liners)

Other Organics

Floral bouquets, houseplants, hair clippings, pet fur, BPI-certified compostable products

Not Accepted

Plastic, glass, aluminum, pet waste, yard waste, diapers, liquids, Styrofoam, twist ties

Not sure? If you don’t know, don’t throw.

Why It Matters

Nearly ⅓ of all food in the U.S. ends up in a landfill. When it does, it breaks down without oxygen and releases methane—a greenhouse gas up to 80x more potent than carbon dioxide.

In fact, 58% of methane emissions from landfills come from food waste alone.

But when you compost, you help transform that waste into something beneficial—healthy soil that stores carbon, conserves water, and supports local farms and gardens.

Benefits of Upcycling Your Food Scraps

  • Keeps food waste out of landfills, reducing methane emissions

  • Creates healthy compost to rebuild local soil

  • Supports local economic justice through our workforce development program, Green Core Training

  • Clean, simple, and odor-free—designed to fit your lifestyle

“Composting through KC Can Compost has greatly reduced the amount of trash I’m putting in the landfill every week. Sometimes I don’t even fill a whole trash bag in one week so I don’t bother putting it out. And because the food waste is going to compost, my landfill trash usually isn’t smelly.”
