Zero Waste Wednesday: Bamboo Toothbrush

Simple Swaps to Wipe Out Your Waste

The toothbrush was invented in the 1930s, and every plastic toothbrush ever created since then still exists.

Plastic, as you know, does not decompose. And the average American who follows their dentist’s recommendations will replace their toothbrush every three months, and throw away approximately 300 toothbrushes over the course of a lifetime.

One easy way to reduce your impact on the planet is to simply stop brushing your teeth.

Kidding! Obviously, that’s a terrible idea. But who said a toothbrush needs to be made out of plastic anyway? It’s just a stick with some bristles on it. Why not make them out of one of the most renewable, sustainable plants in the world: bamboo?

Several brands do just that! Check out Brush With Bamboo. They make a 100% plant-based toothbrush that comes in fully compostable packaging. Order in bulk to further reduce your impact! (Please note: the bristles are not compostable and should be removed using pliers or tweezers.)

You can also buy bamboo toothbrushes from our friends at Pantry Goods when you drop off the contents of your compost bucket.

In addition to being a much more sustainable option, bamboo toothbrushes give your bathroom a classy, elegant look that a brightly colored plastic brush could never hope to match.

Not sure about switching to bamboo? We recommend giving it a try—after all, it only costs you a few dollars to give it a shot!—but if for some reason you still find you prefer plastic, check out this one from Preserve. It comes in six fun colors and the handle is made from 100% recycled plastic (the bristles are brand new nylon).
