Zero Waste Wednesday: Dental Lace

by Jamie Simpher, KC Can Compost Volunteer

Compostable silk dental floss

As any dentist will tell you, flossing is a critical part of dental hygiene. But what about the planet’s hygiene? If everyone in the US flossed according to their dentist’s recommendations, every year, we’d create a landfill the size of a football field and six stories high!

If you’re using the freebie floss your dentist hands out at your biannual appointment, consider making the swap to compostable Dental Lace.

(As always, when making a zero-waste swap, use up what you have before switching to a more sustainable product.)

Dental Lace

Dental Lace is floss made from 100% biodegradable Mulberry silk (but they have a vegan option too, if you’re not into silk!) and it comes in a beautiful reusable glass cannister—you can even choose your color! When was the last time you wanted to display your When you use up the last of your roll, you can order refills, which are delivered in compostable bags and recycled cardboard boxes.

It’s one more small way you can keep plastic from ending up in a landfill—or worse, making its way to the ocean.

And hey, if it makes your bathroom prettier in the process, there’s no harm in that either!
