The Green Core Training Program provides green job training to people who face barriers to employment
“We are faced not with two separate crises, one environmental and the other social, but rather with one complex crisis which is both social and environmental. Strategies for a solution demand an integrated approach to combating poverty, restoring dignity to the excluded, and at the same time protecting nature.” – Pope Francis
The Green Core Training Program provides green job training to people who face barriers to employment. Using the Roots of Success and Conover Online curricula, trainees develop valuable soft skills for success in the workplace such as planning, organization and teamwork. Trainees are also introduced to important environmental issues and topics, encouraged to think about possible solutions, and are provided with opportunities for discussion with their peers. With a working knowledge of environmental issues and tools needed to succeed, trainees can then confidently enter the green economy upon graduation from the Green Core Training Program. Our graduates are prepared to find jobs that address systemic issues impacting their communities and the natural environment.
Transportation Facts: In the United States, at least one third of the urban landscape is devoted to the needs of cars.
In the Roots of Success module on transportation, we learn that urban sprawl is the spreading out of homes and workplaces across an urban landscape. This increases reliance on personal automobiles, which greatly increases resource consumption. By reducing urban sprawl, city planners can improve walkability, incorporate public transit, and include bike paths, keeping citizens safe and reducing resource consumption.
This month we completed a four-week training at Hope Faith Ministries, with 12 people receiving fundamentals of environmental literacy education. Thank you to Hope Faith for hosting this class! Among the graduates of the program, there is a wide range of interests in green jobs. Graduates from this round of classes are interested in jobs in urban agriculture, water delivery, storm and wastewater management, installing solar panels, and working on wind turbines.
Paul was among the graduates of this class. Paul said that he really enjoyed the class, that he learned a lot in it, and that he feels better prepared to find and hold a job. He is particularly interested in jobs in the solar or wind industries; renewable energy that is important for the future of our economy and the planet.
