Drinking Straws
You may recall the campaign a few years ago urging us all to give up drinking straws because they’re killing the sea turtles.
Let’s be real: even though Americans use 500 million drinking straws per day, this is far from the biggest part of the problem when it comes to ocean plastic. The people behind that campaign chose it not because drinking straws are the biggest contributor, but because it’s the “gateway drug” of zero wasting. Reducing or eliminating straws from your life is a great, easy first step.
There are lots of options for going zero waste when it comes to your cocktails. Let’s talk about a few of the most common.
Refuse the straw entirely. Some people do need straws to drink, and they should be allowed to have a straw, naturally. But most of us don’t need one; we just accept them when we’re given them because it’s what we’re used to. It’s not rude to tell your server or bartender, “No straw, please.” (It is rude to berate them if, out of habit, they forget your request and bring you a plastic straw. Be kind to your servers and recognize that they have a lot of things on their minds all at once.)
Paper straws. These are an especially great option for restaurants or people throwing parties. You still want a disposable option, but you don’t want something plastic. Paper straws are far more sustainable even though they aren’t entirely zero waste. Plus, they’re compostable! Buy them in bulk here.
Bamboo straws. While they can be a little challenging to clean and have an unusual texture to them, they absolutely will make you feel like you’re on a permanent vacation. While they’re not the longest lasting option, they’re fully compostable and add a tropical festivity to your cocktails, mocktails, and beverages. Pick up a pack here and start your beach dreams today.
Silicone straws. Long lasting and easy to clean, they even make silicone straws that can be folded up into a small container that fits on your keychain.
Glass straws. These are a great option for a glass of lemonade in your own home. Though they’re more durable than you might expect, they may not be the best choice for keeping with you to use while you’re out. But they come in a variety of colors and add a little sparkle to your drinks! For added fun, check out these glass straws decorated with little frogs!
Stainless steel straws. Extremely durable, though they do conduct heat so be careful when drinking anything warm. Like the silicone straws, stainless steel straws are extremely portable. Check out these collapsible personalized straws!
