KC Can Cheer on the Chiefs—And Compost!

If you’re local to Kansas City, you’re likely getting pumped up for Superbowl Sunday and the chance to see the Chiefs win yet again! If you’re not a football fan, you’re likely getting pumped up for Usher’s halftime show and some of the best commercials advertising brains can come up with—not to mention the Superbowl party you’re planning with all your friends.

This year, as you plan your Superbowl party, consider taking steps to make it a zero waste celebration with these easy tips:

  1. Bring out the reusable plates and cups. Instead of buying paper plates, napkins, and plastic red solo cups, use the real thing! It’ll generate less waste, cost less, and let’s face it, a flimsy paper plate can’t hold nearly as many snacks!

  2. Set up a recycling station with clearly labeled bins for different kinds of recyclables. So much of your trash will likely be recyclable aluminum soda and beer cans. Cans are one of very few types of packaging that are nearly endlessly recyclable. You can melt aluminum down over and over again without the “downcycling” problems you get from recycling plastic. And recycling your cans uses 95% less energy compared to making a new one (source)!

  3. Make homemade snacks. Cheaper and tastier than anything store bought. Try these football-shaped chocolate chip peanut butter blondies, these football brownies, or an old classic, like homemade snack mix or puppy chow.

  4. Have a plan for leftovers. Make sure none of those delicious snacks end up in the landfill! Either plan to have reusable containers on hand, or ask your guests to bring some of their own, so that you don’t have to resort to disposable plastic  containers to send extra food home with your friends.

  5. Set up a composting station. If you’re a veteran customer of KCCC, you already know that composting is super easy, but if your guests don’t compost at home, they may find it intimidating. Put up a little sign by your compost bin explaining what can and can’t be composted. You may even convince some of your friends to start composting themselves!

We wish you a happy and zero-waste Superbowl. Enjoy the game and GO CHIEFS!!!
