Local Infrastructure. National Momentum.
Feed It Onward, KC
KC Can Compost is an innovative nonprofit enterprise committed to the transformation of Kansas City’s social and environmental landscapes.
We not only collect organic waste and divert it from the landfill for composting but also educate and train people struggling to overcome barriers to employment for work in green industry jobs. Two goods, one solution. Through our partnership with the EPA’s Feed It Onward initiative, we are sharing this holistic, community-first model on a national stage—proving that a zero-waste future is built from the ground up.
National environmental goals are only as powerful as the local communities driving them.
At KC Can Compost, we are proud to lead that charge right here at home, and we are incredibly grateful for the national support of the EPA’s Feed It Onward initiative to help lift our message and expand our reach even further.
This summer, our collective efforts will cross a monumental milestone: 10 million pounds of total waste diverted from area landfills. Pushing us over this milestone is our recent work managing massive sustainability and composting efforts at major, high-profile regional soccer events. By implementing a proven, heavy-volume diversion process under the brightest local lights, we have officially tested our operations at the highest scale imaginable.
We have shown that a zero-waste future is entirely possible for Kansas City, from individual doorsteps to crowds of tens of thousands. With national momentum behind us and a battle-tested process fueling us, there is no limit to what we can achieve next.
How to Feed It Onward in KC
-
Set up a commercial diversion program. Turn your unavoidable kitchen scraps and plate waste into an environmental win that aligns with national sustainability standards.
-
Join our residential drop-off or curbside programs. Stop sending your food down the trash chute and start closing the loop locally.
-
Implement zero-waste and composting stations at local festivals and gatherings to show the world how KC leads in sustainability.
National environmental initiatives thrive on local execution. The EPA’s Feed It Onward campaign highlights a critical reality: organic waste is the single largest component filling our landfills, costing our economy billions and accelerating climate change.
At KC Can Compost, we provide the infrastructure to solve this challenge right here in Kansas City. By capturing food scraps from residents, businesses, and large-scale gatherings, we eliminate harmful methane emissions and transform a community problem into a powerful environmental asset.
